2023 Bodegas La Val, Rías Baixas, Albariño

Precise, clean, energetic – this wine captures the essence ofGreen Spain.

Where It Grows:

Rías Baixas, the coldest and wettest area of Galicia, is known for its lush, green landscapes and humid conditions. It’s named for the rías, or fjord-like estuaries, that cut inland from the sea, and has several subzones, including the Miño River- hugging Condado do Tea, where this wine is made. Traditional high pergola training is used to improve airflow and protect the vines, while also allowing cultivation under the vine.

Who Made It:

Founded in 1985, Bodegas La Val was established by José Limere Guille during the region’s quality revolution. One of the first wineries in the Rías Baixas DO, La Val produces wines exclusively from their 130 acres of estate-grown grapes, a rarity for such a parcellated region. José María Ureta, the current winemaker, is one of the region’s promising young talents.

What It Tastes Like:

With aromas of freshly cut grass, flowers, and white fruit, this wine delivers an outrageously refreshing bolt of Albariño energy on the palate. A serious, dry white, its focus and precision are a textbook expression of the grape. A touch of grip and mid-palate weight from the maceration and lees aging adds depth, making it both refreshing
and complex.
