Where It Grows:

Valdeorras, the easternmost wine zone in Galicia, is nestled between Ribeira Sacra and Bierzo. Known for its steeply terraced vineyards, the region is protected from the Atlantic’s influence by nearby mountains to the west. Its combination of slate soils, high altitudes, old vines, and a warmer climate supports the cultivation of the indigenous white Godello grape, producing distinctive and expressive wines.

Who Made It:

Bodegas Avancia was founded in 2007 by importer Jorge Ordóñez, who had long dreamed of establishing his own winery to produce the finest Godello wines in all of Spain. Located in O Barco de Valdeorras, the winery champions the indigenous Godello grape, which nearly went extinct in the 1980s. The region’s slate-rich soils and old, head-
trained vineyards add to the unique character of their wines.

What It Tastes Like:

This intriguing and delicious dry white wine stands out among young Godellos for its balance and edge. Sur lie aging and fermentation in large
neutral oak vessels lend it a rich texture and complexity, reminiscent of Chardonnay in body, but crisp, mineral, and floral. Expect notes of pear, chamomile, and flint, and a ripe, juicy finish.
