2014 Château Pape Clément, Pessac-Léognan

Tasting Grand Cru Classé Bordeaux at the 10+ year mark is always a pinch-me experience. We had the pleasure of exploring a range of 2014 and 2015 selections at a tasting hosted by a renowned Bordeaux négociant.

While the 2015s showed more concentration and richness, the 2014 vintage delivered remarkable purity, balance, and restraint, and a few standouts truly shined. One of the most fascinating comparisons was tasting 2014 Pape Clément alongside First Growth Haut-Brion.

Despite being neighbors just 2 miles apart, their soils tell a different story:

  • Haut-Brion: More deep gravel deposits, ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon.

  • Pape Clément: More limestone and clay influence, supporting both Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

However, the biggest takeaway? The price difference.

  • 2014 Haut-Brion starts at $400 (Ex-Château sourcing).

  • 2014 Pape Clément—your price starts at just $135, with a special price break on two or more bottles.

This is not a secondary market acquisition—it’s a direct buy from the négociant representing the château stateside. Pristine bottles with impeccable fill levels.

After an hour decant, the wine exudes sumptuous, creamy notes of black cherry, black plum, boysenberry fruit layered in with anise spice, espresso, and new leather. For an eleven-year-old wine, the tannins are firm but integrated

96 Points, James Suckling:

“ …  stands out for its exuberant, sexy, full-bodied style … layered, ripe, sexy wine that has loads of currants, blackberries, smoke tobacco, and forest floor aromas and flavors, with just a touch of chocolaty oak. Silky and incredibly pure on the palate, with impeccable balance and sweet, yet present tannin, it’s already impossible to resist, yet is going to deliver the goods for another 20-25 years. It’s a beauty!

95 Points, Jeb Dunnuck:

“ … quite refined and focused with appreciable tension towards the finish that comes laden with succulent, tobacco-infused blackberry fruit. This is a sumptuous and yet refined Pape-Clement that demonstrated the most matière or substance out of all the Pessac-Léognan 2014s that I tasted, except for the Haut-Brion. It is certainly a wine destined for a long future.”
