A Gorgeous Galician Duo

Galicia has taken the sommelier world by storm over the last decade, quickly becoming the preferred playground for Iberian wines that emphasize freshness, transparency, and minerality over power. Unlike most of Spain, this cooler, wetter region–aka “Green Spain”–is just as well known for its whites as its reds, indeed the white wines are probably more widely acclaimed. So when a duo from two of the more exciting subregions, Monterrei and Ribeira Sacra, hit our tasting table I couldn’t help but think that these bottles were perfect encapsulations of why this region is so literally and figuratively cool. Godello still takes a back seat to Albariño, but with a bit more texture and weight to complement the high toned minerality, this bottle from Fragas do Lecer was a dead ringer for top white Burgundy. The Mencía from Rubén Moure is somewhere between top notch Pinot Noir and the best Loire Cabernet Franc, but with a slate and granite based minerality all its own. And the kicker is that both wines are an absolutely incredible value! I highly recommend you grab at least 6 bottles of each (and get free shipping), it’s the smartest wine move you’ll make all year.
