San Fereolo, “1593” Langhe Rosso

Nicoletta Bocca is a globally recognized master of exceptional quality, biodynamic farming, and extremely long-aging Dogliani DOCG reds. Based in the Dolcetto focused growing zone of Dogliani, which is known for its powerful and concentrated takes on the variety, Nicoletta insists on barrel and bottle-maturing her Dolcettos for many years. The “1593” Langhe Rosso bottling is only made in the finest vintages. This 2008 is the current vintage and will have no problem being tucked away for another decade. Extremely limited considering production levels tip 150 to 175 cases per release. Thank our lucky stars we were able to lock in a few cases of this library old-vine Dolcetto. “1593” refers to the date of the first written documentation of Dolcetto in the archives of Dogliani. It’s a fitting title since Nicoletta Bocca has made it her life’s work to reveal this grape’s profound connection to the sub-zone of Valdibà. Not many wines anywhere in the world that are released more than a decade after harvest retail for this price. This 2008 is the current vintage and will easily stand up to Cru Barolos and Barbarescos of the same age for a fraction of the price. This pushes the outer limits of not just Dolcetto, but the great reserve wines of Piemonte.

This deserves a 30 to 60-minute decant to release the endless layers of spices. Aromas of smoke and crushed violets set up for the licorice and savory herb laced cored of crème de cassis, plum, menthol, and licorice. It's amazingly fresh mouthfeel and firm tea-like tannins will enable this Dolcetto to cellar for another decade. Lovers of Piemonte reds should consider not just one but multiple bottles based on limited availability. A true unicorn wine!

Northwestern Italy

Piedmont

Italy’s Piedmont region is really a wine “nation”unto itself, producing world-class renditions of every type of wine imaginable: red, white, sparkling, sweet...you name it! However, many wine lovers fixate on the region’s most famous appellations—Barolo and Barbaresco—and the inimitable native red that powers these wines:Nebbiolo.

Tuscany

Chianti

The area known as “Chianti” covers a major chunk of Central Tuscany, from Pisa to Florence to Siena to Arezzo—and beyond. Any wine with “Chianti” in its name is going to contain somewhere between 70% to 100% Sangiovese, and there are eight geographically specific sub-regions under the broader Chianti umbrella.
