Chapuis & Chapuis, Hautes-Côtes de Beaune Rouge

The irony behind the wines we love offering is that there is never enough to go around, and that’s especially the case for any cuvée under the Chapuis & Chapuis label. Over the past decade, these two brothers have handcrafted the smallest of productions from organic parcels throughout Burgundy, and they now enjoy a much-deserved rabid following.

Lurking among the hautes-côtes, or “upper slopes,” of Burgundy are some of the most spectacular Pinot Noir values in the region. The vines cling to slopes 100-200 meters higher than those grown in the renowned villages below (e.g. Beaune, Puligny, Chassagne, Meursault), and the cooler micro-climate generally results in a longer hangtime. Although not much information can be found about the raw material in Chapuis’ micro-cuvée, we believe it comes from an organically farmed, young-vine parcel in Savigny-lès-Beaune.

It spontaneously fermented and matured in older French barrels briefly before bottling without fining or filtration. Little-to-no sulfur was added throughout the entire winemaking process. This 2017 pours a vibrant ruby-purple and requires a 45-minute decant before revealing pure aromas of sappy black cherry, damp moss, crushed stone, blood orange peel, raspberry skin, red plum, violet, and pomegranate oil. At 12% ABV, this shows incredible lift and verve, and is guaranteed to deliver a dynamic Pinot Noir experience over the next 3-5 years.

France

Bourgogne

Beaujolais

Enjoying the greatest wines of Beaujolais starts, as it usually does, with the lay of the land. In Beaujolais, 10 localities have been given their own AOC (Appellation of Controlled Origin) designation. They are: Saint Amour; Juliénas; Chénas; Moulin-à Vent; Fleurie; Chiroubles; Morgon; Régnié; Côte de Brouilly; and Brouilly.

Southwestern France

Bordeaux

Bordeaux surrounds two rivers, the Dordogne and Garonne, which intersect north of the city of Bordeaux to form the Gironde Estuary, which empties into the Atlantic Ocean. The region is at the 45th parallel (California’s Napa Valley is at the38th), with a mild, Atlantic-influenced climate enabling the maturation of late-ripening varieties.

Central France

Loire Valley

The Loire is France’s longest river (634 miles), originating in the southerly Cévennes Mountains, flowing north towards Paris, then curving westward and emptying into the Atlantic Ocean near Nantes. The Loire and its tributaries cover a huge swath of central France, with most of the wine appellations on an east-west stretch at47 degrees north (the same latitude as Burgundy).

Northeastern France

Alsace

Alsace, in Northeastern France, is one of the most geologically diverse wine regions in the world, with vineyards running from the foothills of theVosges Mountains down to the Rhine River Valley below.
