“Native to the Vallee d’Aoste along the French-Italian alpine border, Fumin is prized by local vintners for its deep color and intense wild berry flavor. The Grosjean family with a handful of other producers has resurrected this grape variety from obscurity, with amazing results.”

The Grosjean family tree originates in Valgrisenche, which is one of the more remote villages in the French-Italian alpine border region. Historically, the family spent winters herding cattle in the mountains, and in the summer months, they farmed grapes and chestnuts in lower elevations. This migrant/seasonal existence stayed constant for generations until 1969 when a local wine enthusiast convinced Dauphin Grosjean to present his family’s wine at the local expo. Dauphin’s wine made such an impression on judges and attendees that the family soon found themselves settled permanently in the foothills, dedicating their focus solely to wine. The Grosjean’s small property encompasses seven hectares of sandy, gravelly vineyards planted to white varieties: Muscat, Pinot Gris, and Petite Arvine, along with red grapes: Petit Rouge, Gamay, Fumin, Cornalin, Premetta, Vuillermin. The vineyard enjoys one of the most breathtaking vistas in the region—on a clear day, you can stand in the vines and observe a panorama spanning from Mont Blanc to the north, all the way to Piedmont in the south.

This effort is 100% Fumin. Add this to your list of “out of left field varietals.” You’ll be a believer after one whiff. It’s the most age-worthy red off the Grosjean estate, as well as being one of the most accessible out of the gate. This is truly mountain growing at its best. The “Vigna Merletta” 2015 boasts an alluring dark as night purple-ruby hue that leads in a mélange of black and blue fruit seasoned with alpine herbs, licorice, and Burgundian like spice.  A richly textured and layered effort with ample fine grain tannins on the back end to keep the package angular and focused. A truly unique wine that transports you to one of the most breathtaking wine regions in the world.
