St. Nikolaus, “Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr” Riesling Spätlese

This historic estate, headquartered in the village of Berkastel, is one of the oldest properties in Germany’s Mosel region, originally founded in 1458 by a philosopher named Nikolaus von Kues. The vineyard holdings measure roughly 15 hectares in total and include a parcel in the “Juffer-Sonnenuhr” vineyard in the town of Brauneberg. “Sonnenuhr” translates as “sundial,” which tells you a lot about the vineyard: it is a steep-pitched site with a south-southeast exposure, enabling it to capture all-day sun. Soils are Devonian blue slate and this wine, designated spätlese, is textbook Mosel: richly concentrated, with a slight hint of fruit sweetness balanced by palate-cleaning acidity and deep minerality. Classic through and through, with notes of white peach, blue plums, wet stones, damp violets, and “petrol,” this is the ideal wine to pair with spicy Thai or Cantonese preparations. The combination of richness and refreshment here is extraordinary!
