Weingut Niklas, Südtirol Lagrein

Weingut Niklas is a family affair that spans three generations in the village of St. Nikolaus. After completing his studies at the famed enology school in San Michele, the young Dieter Sölva assumed all winemaking duties from his father. Dieter is masterful in retaining the unique high-altitude terroir in their estate wines. It’s clearly evident how altitude plays a part in preserving the acid-backbone of this wine.  Minimal oak is used in the aging process, allowing for the fruit and spice to shine through. A quality Cabernet Franc from Chinon comes to mind when tasting this effort. Heady notes of Turkish coffee, fine leather, lavender, and sage abound. The palate is dominated by black plum fruit laced with graphite, pulverized mineral, and cured meat. Fresh and cleansing from start-to-finish. A tremendous versatile red with any seared or roast pork preparation. Enjoy a bottle now and tuck a few away for a few years down the road.

Italy

Northwestern Italy

Piedmont

Italy’s Piedmont region is really a wine “nation”unto itself, producing world-class renditions of every type of wine imaginable: red, white, sparkling, sweet...you name it! However, many wine lovers fixate on the region’s most famous appellations—Barolo and Barbaresco—and the inimitable native red that powers these wines:Nebbiolo.

Tuscany

Chianti

The area known as “Chianti” covers a major chunk of Central Tuscany, from Pisa to Florence to Siena to Arezzo—and beyond. Any wine with “Chianti” in its name is going to contain somewhere between 70% to 100% Sangiovese, and there are eight geographically specific sub-regions under the broader Chianti umbrella.
