Gambelli was the acknowledged master of the Sangiovese grape, known for his keen palate, and, along with cellarmaster Bruno Bini, comprised Manetti’s Tuscan Dream Team. Not only is it the (delicious) product of conscientious natural farming and winemaking, it is relentlessly interesting: Yes, it’s from Tuscany, Italy (not exactly unexplored terrain), but it’s from a part of Tuscany even most wine experts would be hard-pressed to describe. It’s crafted from a grape, Carignan (Carignano in Italian), that few would identify as “Tuscan” and even fewer would ascribe the appropriate respect and appreciation, regardless of where it’s grown. But it works on every level, because, as it happens, this grape and this place have a long history together. The Montevertine 2022 Le Pergole Torte is 100% Sangiovese made in a similar winemaking style as the others, although both botte and barrique are used here. It opens to a dark garnet appearance that is velvety and rich yet shiny on the inside with a ruby brightness that is specific to this Tuscan grape. This is an amazing wine, so precise and balanced. I love the boldness of the vintage, and I am delighted by how elegantly it unfolds over the palate. The wine is contoured and pretty in terms of texture, and yet there are mineral notes that add freshness and vertical lift. This portfolio offers good scale with three wines, an entry-level, middle-level and top-end wine, each offering a distinct identity. Production is 30,000 bottles. While famous houses like Tignanello, Solaia, and Galatrona have long since moved past their 2020 releases—commanding prices anywhere from $115 to nearly $400—proprietor Marco Ricasoli-Firidolfi holds Geremia back much longer, only now unleashing this breathtaking vintage. It stacks up tier-for-tier with those benchmarks in structure and ageability, yet it remains accessible at a fraction of the cost. This is true aristocratic pedigree without the corporate markup, born from certified organic vineyards tended by a family whose winemaking roots in Chianti stretch back 37 generations to the 10th century.

Deep, saturated purple in the glass, the 2020 Geremia opens with an intense core of cassis, black plum, and wild Tuscan herbs.
