As such the clear pathway to today’s wine is through Sancerre: Domaine de Bel Air is just a few country miles down the road in the sibling appellation of Pouilly-Fumé, and their Sauvignon Blanc wines share numerous similarities. But that would be selling the Bel Air team short because today’s wine has its own singular complexity thanks to Chablisienne soils and precise, meticulous winemaking. So yes, think of the best Sancerre, but also think of the best Premier Cru Chablis, and then forget all that and revel in a brilliant rendition of exuberant, aromatic, mineral laden wine that is world class all on its own! Oh, and it’s also a terrific value.

Domaine de Bel Air is situated in the heart of the Pouilly-Fumé appellation, their 15 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc spread across the villages of Pouilly-sur-Loire and Saint Andelain. The international success of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé in the late ’90s and early 2000s meant an influx of outsiders and upstart operations, but Domaine de Bel Air is no such thing: Louis Sadon founded the domaine alongside his wife at the end of the 19th century. The Sadon family can actually trace their viticultural roots in the region back 13 generations, to the mid-1600s. That’s centuries before Sauvignon Blanc was even discovered to be the grape that was key to this region’s success. The family has been there every step of the way as this singular marriage of grape variety and terroir took shape. Now, Katia Mauroy-Gauliez, great-great granddaughter of Louis Sadon, heads the estate.

“Cuvée des Acoins” is a love song to the soil of the parcels where the fruit for this wine is farmed. Indeed, “Acoins” is an old, local dialect word that literally translates to “Kimmeridgian marl,” which is a mixture of ancient, fossil rich limestone and clay. Anyone familiar with Chablis will know the magic of that terroir duo; clay lends power and heft, limestone electric minerality and enlivening acidity. It’s that combination that so thrilled us when we first tasted “Cuvée Acoins.” So often now, Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc, be it from Pouilly or Sancerre, tends toward the opulent, the tropical. It’s simply the way things go in the climate change era, but it makes us thirst all the more for the rigorous and chiseled examples we first cut our teeth on. This is not to say that “Acoins” is lean and mean–far from it! Katia and her team age this beauty for a whopping 18 months on the fine lees before bottling. If that sounds like the same formula as many of the top Chablis producers, you’re not wrong, and it is one more reason why “Acoins” stands head and shoulders above the myriad examples of Eastern Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc.

2021 was a very challenging vintage, and yields were down throughout the region by 50-80%. The “Acoins” vineyard was definitely hit hard, but the fruit that survived was beautifully pristine. Serve this well-chilled in all-purpose stems and get ready for a master class in Sauvignon Blanc balance. The nose bursts with lemon oil, just-ripe white peach, pear skin, and jasmine high notes, cut through with pulverized chalk, crushed oyster shells, lime leaves, and seabreeze. There’s a faintly green quality, a tinge of green peppercorn or pine, but it never pushes into the over-the-top gooseberry or blackcurrant so common these days. The palate is medium-bodied, deeply resonant with further rocky minerality, underpinned by a striking throughline of salty minerality and a fine cut of acid. It’s jam-packed, ready to wow right now alongside any seafood you can think of, but with weight and complexity enough to ponder on its own. In short, it’s textbook Pouilly-Fumé, a reminder of why we love this grape and this region in the first place. And as you probably recall, there are two distinct cuvées that we like to feature almost every time they’re released: “Silice,” and today’s star, “Kriotine.” In Francis Blanchet’s eyes, creating a lineup of high-quality Sauvignon Blanc boils down to one, simple mantra: Different soil? Different wine! “Kriotine” looks past the silex soils that form the prismatic mineral structure of “Cuvée Silice” and hones in on a tiny 1.7-hectare vineyard on chalky-limestone soils. Few wines define an entire region so consistently and pitch-perfectly. Layers of tropical fruit, citrus blossoms, and crushed stones blast out of the glass and race around your palate with zippy energy. Some producers get away with both, but Francis hasn’t done either, and, as we’ve mentioned before, the quality of each new release seems to reach unprecedented levels. It’s a traditionally crafted, extremely affordable, must-have ‘collectible’ for anyone who admires terroir, purity, and the value of a dollar.

Francis Blanchet has an only-in-France pedigree: his extended family has been growing Sauvignon Blanc in Pouilly-Fumé since the 1700s (they are said to still have the original deed for the purchase of the vineyards). Today, Francis still remains active, but his son Mathieu has joined the ranks, representing the eighth generation. Despite their history, the estate remains rather modest in size at around 23 acres. That’s it. Today’s “Kriotine” (a play on the French word criots, which refers to a terroir covered in white stones), hails from a single, 1.7-hectare vineyard that was originally owned by Francis’ grandparents.

The fruit is hand-harvested and fermented using only ambient yeasts in stainless steel. It is then quickly bottled to preserve the freshness and strong mineral imprint. Whereas “Cuvée Silice” typically shows a nervy, edgy side in its youth, “Kriotine” reveals more broadness and juicy layers with less mineral nerve. Word on the street is that 2023 was an extremely challenging vintage in the eastern Loire Valley, but Mathieu and Francis have managed a small miracle–this is likely to be one of the best in class for 2023.

When consuming, simply pull the cork a few minutes beforehand (or decant for 15 minutes) then serve in all-purpose white stems around 50 degrees. Again, the vintage brings some viscosity to the palate, delivering layers of ripe, rounded fruits leading to a deeply mineral finish. If you haven’t yet had a Pouilly-Fumé—or a Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc, for that matter—that made you say “wow,” I suspect Blanchet’s 2023 “Kriotine” will change that. Of course, names tend to have a life of their own and old school California wine drinkers are likely familiar with “Fumé Blanche,” a name given to vaguely Loire inspired (aka not aged in toasty oak) Sauvignon Blanc and similar blends made in Napa and the surrounding areas. Pair with a simple spread of soft cheeses and paté, or for a different but still excellent experience try the below recipe for Peruvian inspired ceviche.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0551/3628/8822/files/2023SergeDagueneau_Fils_Pouilly-FumeLesPentes_MainImage-1800x1800.jpg?v=1735833124
2022-j-de-villebois-pouilly-fumsomm2504-vlbs22pfm-750
2022 J. de Villebois, Pouilly-Fumé

J. de Villebois farms extensive vineyards throughout the Loire Valley, benefiting from intense light and mild temperatures that ensure perfect ripeness while maintaining the region's trademark freshness.

They’re committed to sustainable cultivation, avoiding herbicides and fungicides to preserve soil microbiology, and they prune for low yields and ripe fruit. 2022’s warm, dry growing season, with rainfall at just the right moments, delivered richness and depth balanced by bright acidity.

For this Pouilly-Fumé, de Villebois employs traditional methods: quick transport to minimize skin contact, gentle pressing, and fermentation in stainless steel for 7-15 days—all to preserve the purest expression of Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc, and it shows in the glass.

Why You'll Love It

Perfect terroir clarity: The complex geology of Pouilly-Fumé—including the prized silex (flint) soils—delivers a mineral signature that can't be found anywhere else.

Great vintage: Jancis Robinson called 2022 “A warm ripe vintage…Concentrated wines with good acidity for whites, reds, and sweets.
