Third Growth Château Cantenac Brown is one of these, although with its estate is Tudor in style, thanks to its Great Britain roots. Today, the estate is owned by the Burgundy-based Le Lous family and has grown to 60 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot—expansive, yes, but still humble in comparison to famed First Growth Chateau Margaux.

The 2016 is elegantly layered, sublime, loaded with earth and savor—wines like this create that “aha” moment for those who still cannot grasp the unrivaled greatness of the Left Bank. Just check out their neighbors: Rauzan-Segla is a literal stone’s throw away, and the vines of Margaux, Brane-Cantenac, Palmer, and Lascombes surround it. Our tiny back-vintage parcel has just arrived after 15+ years of stock-still cellar aging, and, lest I get too attached to it for my own consumption, I had to get this offer out to you immediately. So, if you’re always on the hunt for mature, regal, ultra-savory Bordeaux, Rauzan-Gassies’ 2005 smokeshow is as sure a bet as they come. First come, first served until it’s gone forever!

The origins of Rauzan-Gassies begin in the 1600s, back when the estate simply existed as Domaine de Rauzan. By the time of the Grand Cru Classification of 1855, inheritances had divided the two properties into Rauzan-Segla and Rauzan-Gassies, both of which were rewarded Second Growth (Deuxièmes Cru) statuses. Another milestone came in the following century, following the aftermath of World War II when Rauzan-Gassies was acquired by the Quié family. Since that time, they have poured in grueling work and financial investment to increase the renown of this historic Margaux property. That wherewithal shines brightly in today’s 2005 offering.

The family owns roughly 30 hectares of vines, averaging about 30 years of age, that are largely farmed and maintained by the estate. Come harvest, yields are kept low and the clusters are manually picked. In the cellars, the varieties ferment separately in vats before blending and aging in new and used French barrels for 12 months.

Much ink has been spilled over the 2005 vintage, as it was the most praised of the 21st century at the time of release, and critics have tracked the evolution of these beauties with much frequency. It was a powerful and ripe vintage with robust tannins—which can still be found in today’s savory, impressively structured wine.

Rauzan-Gassies’s 2005 Margaux Grand Vin is still clinging to the final stages of its primary fruit with ripe cassis, black cherry, dried plum, and redcurrant but its savor is what dominates center stage: pencil lead, cedar chips, cigar box, camphor, underbrush, bay leaf, crushed gravel, vintage leather. The palate is just under medium-plus in body and delivers fine, earthy layers with beautiful elegance. I suggest pulling the cork and tasting your bottle before deciding if a decant is right for you. My bottle was best after 20 minutes in a decanter, and it continued singing well into the later hours. Since this parcel was stored to perfection over the last two decades, your bottles should keep until 2030 but there’s no need to wait. This is already enjoying its peak drinking window! First we had a best-value, Right Bank winner from Lalande-de-Pomerol, and today’s discovery is an even rarer bird: Château des Graviers is a small, family-owned, biodynamically farmed estate with a very talented, fifth-generation winemaker at the helm. Nearby neighbor Château Margaux, by comparison, has 87 hectares in the appellation, and 262 in total. Christophe began converting everything to biodynamic practices almost immediately after he took charge. Tireless vineyard work, eschewing all chemical treatments and fertilizers, and without the aid of slick machinery, is definitely not the standard in most of Bordeaux. Industrial farming is still sadly prevalent here, but the best châteaux have begun to realize the importance of natural farming, and Graviers has been leading this movement for years. In the cellar, Christophe is just as fastidious, using a range of different fermentation vessels and techniques, each one specific to its own grape: Cabernet Sauvignon is dominant here, but they use all six allowed varieties. Aging takes place in a similar mélange of the classic French barrique (about 25% are new), clay amphora, and hexagonal concrete tanks. It brings the power of a warm vintage like 2015 or 2020 that followed it, but with a balancing effect of structure and finesse. The best comparison is to the deliciously graceful and age-worthy 1989s. Serve Château des Graviers at classic cellar temperature, around 60-65 degrees, in your best Bordeaux stem after a decant of about an hour. The full spectrum of this hallowed terroir awaits: Cassis, wild red and black raspberries, sweet red plums, violets, cocoa powder, leather, cedar, meaty iodine, and saline minerals all swirl inside a deep, ruby hue with hints of indigo. Today is just such a day. We present the 2001 Château Cantenac Brown Margaux–a legendary Classified Growth from perhaps Bordeaux’s most hallowed appellation, now, at almost a quarter-century of age, at its absolute drinking peak. Typically we have to invest hundreds of dollars and decades of patience just for the chance to enjoy a bottle like this, but today we get to skip the line and indulge in Bordeaux’s glorious heights straight away. Paulliac is more powerful, Saint-Estèphe more structured, but nothing soars like Margaux. Here, with especially poor gravel soils, the vines struggle mightily. In lesser examples of the appellation, the resulting wines are pretty but thin; in the hands of proprietors like Cantenac Brown, they achieve stunning aromatic heights other appellations can only dream of, while retaining the region’s famous long-lived structure. Cantenac Brown, located on the Cantenac-Margaux plateau, demonstrates this ably. Since the early 1800s, this estate has been a diverse ecosystem of vineyard and native woodland, and in 1855 the château achieved the status of Third Growth. It then flew under the radar for much of the 20th century. But in the late 1980s, José Sanfins–born in Portugal but raised among the vines of Bordeaux–joined Cantenac-Brown and reestablished its reputation. Now it’s widely regarded as one of the appellation’s leaders in both quality and sustainability, with a state of the art cellar made entirely from earth harvested on the property.

Sanfins’ skill shines especially in a year like 2001. There was never much hope for 2001 becoming a coveted collector’s vintage, as the hype around 2000 took years to subside, but it turned out to be a true Bordeaux lover’s dream. It was a cooler vintage marked more by earth than sun, and collectors needed to choose carefully if you were going to lay anything down for decades. But now, almost twenty-five years removed, we know that 2001 is a great vintage in its own right. A bottle of Cantenac-Brown reveals the vintage’s beauty, with its mix of heady perfume and fine-tuned structure. Most importantly, it’s peaking right now. 2000 Cantenac-Brown might be stealing the show in another ten years, but it’s the 2001 that’s outshining all else at the moment.

We strongly recommend decanting the 2001 Cantenac Brown Margaux to get it off the sediment and let it unfurl after resting so long in the bottle. After that, buckle up. The nose opens with a deep and thrumming mix of dried black and purple fruits like black raspberry, blackcurrant, and plum skin. There’s an incredible depth of spicy savor, from cedar to black peppercorn to tobacco, all of it underlain by granite, pencil lead, and turned earth. It’s hedonistic and poised at the same time, spellbindingly complex. On the palate it’s firmly medium-bodied, harkening back to the Bordeaux of yesteryear and continues the earthy, mushroomy savor.
