What you’re getting in “Cuvée 1911” is a little piece of performance art in the form of a bottle. Jean-François is eccentric and a bit of a showman; there’s no specific formula behind 1911, but instead a periodic exploration of older reserve wines and the assembly of a blend according to Jean-François’ whims.

Clouet farms only eight hectares of vines, most of them in Bouzy, a Grand Cru village famous for its exceptionally concentrated and vinous Pinot Noir. A slight dip in the Bouzy hillside protects it from harsh winds and earns it slightly warmer temperatures. Always coming in at 100% Grand Cru Pinot Noir, “1911” is sourced from 10 of their best parcels, or lieux-dits, in Bouzy that produce a wine of rich concentration and intense minerality. This is his newest disgorgement, with 50% consisting of a barrel-fermented selection from 2008 and the other half coming from a perpetual reserve started in 2002. After the wine was bottled in the spring of 2009, it aged on its lees for nearly 12 years: The bottle we opened (one week ago today) was disgorged on December 15th, 2020. To allow the magnificent aromatics to really blossom, avoid serving in a narrow, traditional Champagne flute. Opt instead for a white wine stem, a more open, tulip-shaped Champagne stem, or a large Burgundy stem (I typically chose the latter). Whichever you choose, the wine surges with energy and freshness, releasing red and yellow apple, Rainier cherry, blanched almonds, hazelnut, plum skin, currants, white flowers, lees, brioche, citrus curd, oyster shell, and pulverized stone. Albeit a bit reticent at first, the palate broadens and expands as the wine opens up, and by your second glass, starts revealing Clouet’s signature luxuriousness. The dosage is kept below four grams per liter, preserving the wine’s extra brut purity and emphasizing its crystalline acidity and vitality. The Vesselle surname is attached to several different properties within Bouzy, which can get confusing, but Delphine and David Vesselle have distinguished themselves by producing some of the most distinct bottlings of all. This Extra Brut Champagne offers a seamless interplay of fruit richness and mineral tension, balanced texture, and a long, mouth-coating finish that speaks to its care and versatility.

Why You'll Love It

Elegantly balances the fruity richness of Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir with the crispness and lift of Chardonnay.

Crafted with sustainable vineyard practices that ensure purity and terroir-driven expression.

Multi-vintage blend and extended lees aging provide depth, complexity, and seamless mouthfeel.

How to Serve It

Serve chilled between 50–54°F to highlight freshness and delicate aromatics.

Ideal as a versatile aperitif and with a broad range of foods, especially roasted poultry, seafood, and mushroom dishes.

Serve in an all purpose white stem to open up subtle tertiary notes while preserving its vibrant structure.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0551/3628/8822/files/MVChampagneLaurentLequart_L_HeritiereExtraBrut_1.png?v=1763166113
2018-champagne-l-guillette-romelot-c-pages-d-autrefois-mill-sime-brutsomm2512-lgrm18autch-751
2018 Champagne Léguillette-Romelot "Cépages d’Autrefois Millésime Brut"

A rare single-vintage showcase from this small grower-producer in Charly-sur-Marne (Marne Valley/Côte des Bar), blending five of Champagne's seven permitted grape varieties to highlight forgotten heirlooms: 59% Pinot Meunier (for roundness and fruit), 18% Pinot Blanc (golden stone fruit vibrancy), 15% Pinot Noir (structure), 5% Petit Meslier (crisp acidity), 2% Chardonnay (lift), and 1% Arbane (floral nuance). Based in Moussy in the Vallée de la Marne, the Ruelle family has quietly farmed about six hectares—anchored by Grand Cru holdings in Chouilly, Cramant, and Oiry—for decades, selling most of their wine to longtime local customers and restaurants. There’s no website, no glossy marketing; even importer Charles Neal had to wait years before being granted tiny allocations. Today, Michel Ruelle and Martine Pertois’ children, Benoît and Virginie, carry on this low-key, high-skill legacy, crafting Champagnes that showcase deep chalk soils, lutte raisonnée farming, and long lees aging at prices that still feel almost implausibly fair.

Brut Eclat d’Or is their Meunier-led multi-vintage jewel, built around a brilliant cépage of 80% Pinot Meunier, 10% Pinot Noir, and 10% Chardonnay, with roughly 70% of its base wine from the excellent 2020 vintage. The wine spends about four years sur lie before disgorgement (here, in 2025), and receives a modest 6 g/L dosage—just enough to round out its incisive, mineral spine without dulling its vibrancy. The result is a Champagne whose color, aromatics, and texture punch far above its category: layers of orchard and red fruits, brioche, citrus, and chalk unfurl slowly, with an almost Grand Cru–like finesse and a finish that lingers well over a minute. Based in the Grand Cru village of Cramant, the family has been farming Chardonnay here since the late 19th century, with holdings in Cramant, Chouilly, Oger, and Vertus that read like a roll call of great chalk. The wines are unapologetically classical: long-leased, low-dosage, and built around an almost old-school Côte des Blancs texture rather than simple “aperitif” charm. “Cuvée Signé François” is the family’s insider bottling—a Blanc de Blancs drawn from their oldest vines, named for François Larmandier as a sort of personal signature on what the estate does best.

The 2012 “Cuvée Signé François” taps into a vintage that growers still talk about in almost hushed tones: low yields, serious structure, and chiseled acidity wrapped around ripe, concentrated fruit. Old-vine Chardonnay from deeply chalky Grand Cru parcels gives the wine its core of energy and mineral drive, while the Brut Nature/Zero dosage elevates every detail—citrus oils, crushed shell, pastry, and a faint, noble oxidative whisper from extended lees aging. of Champagne's elite Grand Cru villages where Pinot Noir reigns supreme, Jean Vesselle crafts the extraordinary “B3” (Blanc de Blancs de Bouzy)—a 100% Chardonnay rarity born from just ~1 hectare of meticulously farmed vines. With fewer than 90 cases (1,000 bottles total) produced for the world, this Brut Nature reflects the estate's organic-leaning practices: hand-harvested grapes fermented on native yeasts in used oak, followed by six years of lees aging in subterranean chalk cellars before disgorgement without dosage, leaving ~2.5g/L natural residual sugar.

The Vesselle family, rooted in Bouzy's storied terroir, pours tireless vineyard devotion into every cuvée, making “B3” a testament to subtle power from a Pinot-dominated village. The base wines ferment and age in oak for added texture and complexity, followed by extended lees aging in bottle and a very low dosage in the Extra Brut range. The result is a wine that reads as a serious, structured, gastronomic Champagne first and an “aperitif” second: a Blanc de Noirs that carries the red-fruited depth of Pinot Noir, the chalk-driven cut of top Chardonnay, and the kind of detail that only careful élevage can bring.
