What about sub-$100 gems that’ll reward years of aging alongside any cult collectible? Or Pinots that redefine the meaning of fruit intensity and soil character? If your answer to any of these questions is “not enough,” Philippe Livera’s blockbuster will satisfy these neglected needs in one glorious swoop.

“Clos Village” is a brooding, dark, deeply concentrated Pinot Noir that envelops every inch of your palate with dense berry liqueur and ferrous minerality; it is the liquified essence of Gevrey-Chambertin in 2020. And while it may not come with a Premier/Grand Cru label, it holds all the pedigree one could ask for: 70-year-old vines, prime positioning just below Gevrey’s band of 1er Crus, and rigorously detailed winemaking from a four-generation family of genuine farmers. For many years now, Livera’s wines have been cornerstones of both our Burgundy offers and our personal cellars, and this vintage of “Clos Village” may just be the best argument for their greatness yet!

The Liveras first bottled their wines for sale in 2007 when current proprietor Damien took over. That might make them sound like a young up-and-comer, but the family has farmed vines and made wine in Gevrey-Chambertin since 1920. Before ’07, they’d sold finished wines to esteemed négociants like Louis Jadot and Bouchard. But when Damien came in, everything changed. He eliminated herbicides, began plowing the vineyards, drastically reduced yields, and upgraded the cellar. From the start, Damien marked his family’s domaine as one to watch. He hit the ground running and has put out some stellar bottles over the past decade. In 2020, though, his wines, especially the “mere” village-ranked “Clos Village,” have achieved a whole new level of complexity, seriousness, and outright greatness.

There are actually multiple parcels called “Clos Village” in Gevrey, but the source for today’s bottling is a Livera monopole. The walled vineyard sits outside of the family winery, about 150 yards downslope from the village’s most famous Premier Cru, “Clos Saint-Jacques.” Like in that esteemed site, the east-facing Pinot Noir vines in “Clos Village” plunge their roots beneath chalky marl into a deep limestone subsoil. The Livera’s vines here average over 70 years of age, with some dating back to the domaine’s founding over a century ago. The fruit is rigorously selected by hand in the vineyard and, once in the cellar, goes through a 5-7 day cold soak. Post-fermentation takes place in French barrels, 40% new. All of this combines for a wine in which every Gevrey hallmark—depth, structure, savory perfume—is cranked to full volume.

Fair warning: Livera’s “Clos Village” is a serious wine. Like all of the best 2020 Gevreys, it’s best not to touch it until at least 2024. If you absolutely can’t keep your hands off of it (I don’t blame you), I’d recommend at least an hour-long decant before dipping your toes in. It pours an opaque ruby-violet with viscous tears—it’s surprisingly dark for Pinot but a beautiful sign of what’s to come. The nose booms with blackcurrant, crushed black cherry, raspberry liqueur, sanguine iron, struck flint, fallen leaves, and mushroomy earth. On the palate, it’s medium-plus-bodied and fathomlessly deep with a sense of coiled tension running through soft acidity and muscular yet fine-grained tannin. It’s dark and concentrated and powerful, but in no way blowsy or overdone. Through it all, there’s a deep sense of soul, a feeling that when the village first earned its reputation as the boldest of the Côte de Nuits, it was staked on wines like this. As a result, these finicky vines have proven both difficult and expensive to manage which is why only a few can lay claim to possessing any. One such producer is Arnoux-Lachaux, whose own Pinot Fin bottling might just be the most expensive Bourgogne Rouge on the planet—I can’t even bring myself to tell you the price. Another producer is Remoissenet, who owns and biodynamically farms two extremely old Pinot Fin parcels in the finest section of Grand Cru Charmes-Chambertin. The few treasured clusters they’re able to harvest are bursting with concentration, and Remosisenet further dials up the aromas and intensity by way of natural fermentation and brand-new, high-quality French oak. Remoissenet owns two tiny parcels in Charmes’ créme de la créme northern section, essentially at the convergence of three other Grand Crus: Le Chambertin, Griotte, and Clos de Bèze.

As discussed earlier, Remoissenet’s two plots are planted entirely to 60+-year-old Pinot Fin vines, propagated by selection massale. But when meticulously farmed and cultivated by biodynamic experts, like Remoissenet, they can yield some of the most gorgeous, concentrated Pinot fruit imaginable. In the dry, hot, and fantastic 2019 vintage, their low-yielding crop was hand-harvested and sorted multiple times before entering the cellar. We’re starting off the year strong with an end-of-vintage 2014 Grand Cru from one of Gevrey’s most quintessential names: Frédéric Esmonin. By now, you’re surely familiar with the name, but what of the vineyard in question, Ruchottes-Chambertin?

You’re excused if you don’t have any bottles of this laying around in your cellar: This reigns as one of Burgundy’s smallest Grand Crus, and the handful of producers that do craft Pinot Noir here all belong in the “luxury goods” category—Domaines Roumier, Rousseau, and Mugneret-Gibourg all fetch over $1,000, and Pacalet’s is about half of that. As for Esmonin? Just $140, and that’s not for some juicy new release but the final tranche of his 2014, one of my favorite “classic” vintages. So, if you wish to lose yourself in a deep, savory, truly soulful Grand Cru and be reminded why Gevrey-Chambertin is one of the top Pinot Noir-producing villages on earth, Esmonin’s stunningly perfumed Ruchottes is it! You’ll have to act quickly because we have just seven cases to share. Note: If you were quick enough to secure a bottle of their 2014 Mazy-Chambertin last year, please open them simultaneously so I can live vicariously through you!

Located in Gevrey-Chambertin and focused almost entirely on wines from that village, the Esmonin family has only been “domaine bottling” its own wines since the late 1980s; prior to that, André Esmonin sold grapes (and wine) to some of Burgundy’s most respected négociants, including Jadot and Leroy. André continues to assist his son, Frédéric, at this tiny property, whose vineyard holdings include pieces of the Grand Crus Ruchottes- and Mazy-Chambertin as well as three Premier Cru sites. Their vines are very old (50+ years in the Grand Crus) and production is, as you might expect, very small: Overall, they bottle around a dozen different wines, none of them in significant quantities.

The Esmonins farm sustainably, practicing a French approach known as lutte raisonnée, which essentially translates to intervention only when necessary. Their half-hectare of 60-year-old vines in Grand Cru Ruchottes du Bas (the lower part of the vineyard) cozies right up to the walled parcel farmed by legend Armand Rousseau, whose own 2014 bottling sells for a cool $1,000. Still, regardless of who’s selling it, a wine from Ruchottes-Chambertin will not be cheap, because it is by definition extremely rare: the entire vineyard spans just over three hectares, and is divvied up amongst an all-star cast of Gevrey heavyweights. That’s why “value” is an apt descriptor for Esmonin’s $140 back-vintage bottling!

After a hand harvest, their Ruchottes-Chambertin grapes undergo a brief cold maceration before fermentation. The resulting wine matures in high-quality mostly new French barrels for approximately 16 months before an unfiltered bottling. This 2014 from Esmonin is textbook Grand Cru red Burgundy—a truly regal red wine, succulent and deeply perfumed in a way that few other reds of the world can match. Structured and medium-plus-bodied on the palate, its tannins lend a firm backbone that deepens the woodsy flavors and crushed mineral core. It starts with the Domaine des Varoilles, a small but important landholder and winemaker in Gevrey-Chambertin, whose holdings around the village include the monopoles “Clos des Varoilles,” “La Romanée,” “Clos du Couvent,” and today’s lovely “Clos du Meix des Ouches.” In 1990, the estate was sold to a Swiss investor, Gérard Hammel, and a silent partner already in Burgundy. That silent partner was the Misset-Chéron family, who owned small parcels throughout the Côte de Nuits, including Domaine Paul Misset. A few years ago, Hammel decided to sell his portion of the Varoilles estate back to the Misset-Chérons, and they in turn decided to combine all their holdings together, which is how Domaine Couvent was born.

Philippe Chéron, who was at the helm of Domaine Misset, was the family’s unanimous choice to lead this new project, and he is joined by his son (and likely successor), Paul. In the cellar, they again exemplify the “what’s old is new” philosophy, using traditional techniques that are gentle and free of manipulation, including adding only minimal amounts of SO2 when bottling. Their wines are clean and classically built, but check almost all the “natural” wine boxes, too.
