Although you may have heard of the Chalk Hill AVA in passing, most aren’t deeply familiar with this hidden gem of an appellation in Sonoma County. Calluna’s picturesque vineyards, perched on the western side of the Mayacamas range, enjoy the highest elevations in the entire appellation. In turn, this delivers excellent sun exposure, minimal frost, cooler overall temperatures, and retained acidity in the grapes for a balance that is closer to Bordeaux than the valleys of Sonoma and Napa. David Jeffrey knows this secret well, and he uses it to craft some of the most complex, age-worthy masterpieces of Northern Sonoma wine making that we’ve ever tasted.
At 10 years of age, the 2014 is wonderfully balanced, still loaded with deep, rich fruit, spice, minerals, and a level of sophistication rarely seen in this remote AVA. You get all that and more, and at a price that is half that of comparable gems over the ridge in Napa. Bring some Calluna home for the holidays!
Why You'll Love It
Bordeaux precision in California clothing: cassis, tobacco, graphite with ripe tannins and vibrant acidity from volcanic shale/clay soils.
A blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Cabernet Franc, 17% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, and 2% Malbec. Barrel-fermented for depth without overripeness or manipulation.
David Jeffrey's pedigree shines: Quinault-trained techniques yield structure + Sonoma lushness; ages gracefully 10–20+ years now at peak.
