Yes, it checks off all the important boxes: It’s a delicious, terroir transparent expression of Pinot; it is made by a small, family owned estate; it is farmed and produced with respect to tradition and nature; but, it also hails from a special, single vineyard that is a literal living museum of Burgundian viticulture. “Les Mont Battois” sits just above Savigny-les-Beaune, and is owned by GEST (more on them later), who operates this little vineyard as an historical nursery and research lab for all the ancient, heirloom grape varieties of Burgundy. The warm, dry summer of 2022 led to very healthy clusters and the ripeness of the vintage is readily apparent in the deep garnet color, while the hints of pink at the rim point to the wine's youthful freshness. The farmer is François Bitouzet, and from this parcel he crafts an elegant, silky red that hits all the same pleasure points as his top Premier Crus, but since it is technically a humble Bourgogne Rouge, the value is astounding. This restraint is echoed in the cellar; juice is vinified gently and slowly with minimal sulfur. The end goal of the entire process is to produce wines that mature in the cellar for many years, and gradually evolve in aromatics and structure. In a region increasingly overrun with estates bottling young, forward, “modern” Burgundy, the Bitouzet family are arch traditionalists. This means that most of the wines born in the Bitouzet cellar require a good amount of aging before they awaken from their old-school slumber. Within a few decades he had managed to grow their holdings to 30 hectares, and had completely renovated and updated the winery that sits on a picturesque piece of land in the village of Pierreclos, near the heart of the Mâcon. Before that expansion took off Jean-Claude was introduced to a young American importer named Neal Rosenthal back in 1982, and they have been partners in selling these old-school Burgundian values to the U.S.market ever since.

Sadly, Jean-Claude passed away unexpectedly in 2008, but his three sons immediately stepped in to take over all the operations at their family business. In the past decade plus they have steadfastly built upon the success that their father found, and indeed have made their own small improvements in the cellar and vineyards. This is the Mâcon, so the vast majority of their holdings are Chardonnay, but they do have a single vineyard of Pinot Noir located in Bussières and known simply as “Les Clos.” It’s a fully south facing parcel on a gentle slope, which allows for easy ripening and results in a very fresh, fruit forward wine that nonetheless maintains classic Burgundian structure and hints of savory earth–aka “sauvage.”

For years the Thévenet clan used only stainless steel for their Bourgogne Rouge, but in the past few years they have begun to put some of the wine into used barrels to add a bit more texture and complexity. As such, treat this extraordinary value as you would your best Red Burgundy: serve in large stems at cellar temperature after a splash decant. A rush of black and red fruit is up front, including spiced cherries, Damson plum, and wild blackberries, and that is followed by a nice dollop of dried flowers, espresso, wet earth, and gamey minerals. It’s of course a perfect match for any French bistro classic, but right now I think a classic patty melt would be an amazingly satisfying match. We kicked off the day with some value-laden Bourgogne Rouge, and now we really kick it up a notch with Domaine d'Ardhuy’s Haut-Côte de Nuits Rouge Monopole "Clos des Langres.” This is one of those hidden gems Burgundy drinkers dream of discovering: It hails from a single, special lieu-dit only a select few even know of, famed for its ability to produce next level juice despite its location well off the Côte d’Or’s beaten path. Spicy and earth-driven like great Nuits-St-George to its north, silken and poised like Corton to the south, “Clos des Langres” is a truly singular experience. There’s only one domaine to try it at though, and that’s Domaine d’Ardhuy. Indeed, despite owning land in no fewer than five Grand Crus, the Ardhuys prize “Clos des Langres” as their greatest viticultural asset. These are the higher elevation vineyards that surround the Côte d’Or (“Haut Côte” literally translates to “high slopes), where for much of Burgundy’s history the wines have been overtly rustic, even under ripe. But as vintages have gotten warmer and warmer, the Haut-Côte has proven to be the next frontier for producers who prize Burgundy’s elegance above all else. The d’Ardhuy family is perfectly situated then, having in “Clos des Langres” one of the few vineyards in the whole appellation with anything like name recognition. The Clos sits almost dead center between the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune, on a gentle south-east slope over brown limestone. Vines have grown in these three hectares for almost fifteen centuries, originally planted by Cluny monks. In the mid-20th century, the d’Ardhuy family took it over, and it’s been the crown jewel of their estate ever since; their home and winery are located adjacent to the clos and it serves as the beating heart of their operation.

Domaine d’Ardhuy began in 1930 when Pierre André started a winemaking and negociant project. He hired one Gabriel Liogier d’Ardhuy to manage the vineyards and make the wine, and eventually Gabriel married Pierre’s daughter Eliane. Upon Pierre’s passing, the estate transferred to Eliane, and the domaine we know today was born. It’s a sizable operation, just over 38 hectares spread from Gevrey-Chambertin to Puligny-Montrachet. The estate is now headed by Mireille d’Ardhuy, helped along by her six(!) sisters. Since 2012, they’ve farmed organically and biodynamically, emphasizing manual plowing of the vineyards and meticulous hand harvesting. In the past the wines were a bit heavily oaked, but they’ve throttled that back and now produce supremely finessed reds. Their 2021 “Clos des Langres” is a case in point.

Blind, this vintage of “Clos des Langres” could fool anyone into thinking they’ve got Premier or even Grand Cru Burgundy in front of them. There’s incredible complexity on display in the nose – notes of wild berries, cherry pit, violets, crushed rocks, tobacco, fresh mushroomy earth, and black tea. There’s a hint of warm spice, possibly from oak, but it’s beautifully integrated. The palate is silken yet svelte, sweet fruit tones enhanced by a rich mid-palate texture before a wash of polished acid leads into the spicy finish. There’s amplitude and volume on display, but elegance and breed rule the day here. In a few years, we’ve no doubt this is going to be some truly profound stuff.
