All of these factors contribute to the wine's ability to achieve that ultimate Barolo high mark, where power, elegance, and finesse are seamlessly woven together. “Vigna Merenda” is only produced in the best vintages, and 2016 was not only great but it is likely the most complete wine the estate has ever produced.

With an exemplary vintage like 2016, patience is needed. Then there’s their home village of Verduno, one of the 11 communes that make up the Barolo appellation, which has been having a moment lately. The Alessandria estate, which has been in the same family since 1870, includes about 12 hectares of vineyards, most of them in Verduno. Essentially an extension of the La Morra vineyard area, with similar eastern (and sometimes northern) exposures, Verduno is home at least one bona-fide “grand cru”— the “Monvigliero” vineyard—which Fratelli Alessandria counts among its holdings.

The Monvigliero site has a wide range of southerly expositions, essentially swooping around from southeast to southwest, and reaches to about 300 meters of elevation. This site is one of Barolo’s undisputed Grand Crus, with an all-star roster of legendary producers (again, many named “Conterno”) farming pieces of it. It is in every way the Barolo big leagues. In this rarefied landscape Diego Conterno’s eponymous label is relatively new, but he’s hardly a rookie: he literally grew up in the Ginestra cru, and the parcel he now farms and features in a vineyard-designate bottling is within the subsection called “Sorì Ginestra,” which boasts the most perfect southern exposure of all. Bottom line? This is blue chip Barolo for an extremely modest price.

Diego, along with his cousin, Claudio, was part of the team that established the Conterno-Fantino winery in 1982, but in 2000, Diego struck out on his own, producing his first vintage under his own name in 2003. But unlike the Conterno-Fantino wines, which are known for their bold, “modernist” sheen—something many of the most famous wines from Ginestra share—Diego was after something very different with his own label. His are deeply traditional wines, aged in larger-sized barrels and rested for a period in concrete tanks before bottling, resulting in a wine that displays Ginestra’s characteristic plushness in a more finessed and perfumed way.

Now assisted by his son, Stefano, who came aboard in 2010, Diego now has a recently renovated winery to work from as well—just upslope from Giacomo Conterno, no less (no relation). The Conterno clan Diego belongs to has owned vines in the Ginestra cru for more than 150 years, and when he sold his stake in Conterno-Fantino, he took with him a few long-held family plots, including a little over two hectares in “Sorì Ginestra.” Overall, he and Stefano now farm 7.5 hectares, all in the village of Monforte, and achieved organic certification in 2014.

What stands out most about their 2019 “Ginestra” is its restraint: It is beautifully ripe and relatively soft for a young Barolo, but it is not weighty or dense, as you might expect from a full-south exposure. Lots of people compare Barolo to Burgundy, but in most instances, I really don’t see it—but with this wine, the comparison is apt. The earthy, tobacco-y savor of Nebbiolo is nicely checked by the plush cherry fruit, and the overall impression is one of finesse and lifted perfume. It was aged 24 months in used 500-liter barrels from the Austrian cooper Stockinger, then six months in concrete tank and a year in bottle before release. In the glass, it’s a bright garnet red moving to pink at the rim, with aromas of red and black cherry, blood orange peel, rose petals, tobacco, leather, and forest floor. It is downright plush by Barolo standards, and yet the acidity is plenty to get your mouth watering. Up until 2006, brothers Luigi and Giacomo Oddero co-owned the estate founded by their grandfather, Giacomo, in the late 1800s. When the brothers and their respective families decided to go separate ways, they divided up one of the most enviable and extensive collections of Barolo vineyards which included parcels all over the appellation, not just in the family’s home base in La Morra. While Giacomo (the younger) and his family retained the original winery in La Morra—whose wines are now labeled “Oddero Poderi e Cantine”—Luigi and family acquired the historic Luigi Parà winery, about a kilometer away. Barolo’s deep viticultural traditions are fusing with youthful energy, and it all means the region has never been more exciting. Case in point: Fogliati’s Barolo “Bussia” 2016. It comes from 80-year-old vines in one of the region’s most legendary vineyards, made by an estate with over two centuries of grape-growing history, and shepherded into bottle using old-school, artisanal technique. But it also embodies the most exciting trends in the appellation–young, passionate, and globally-inspired talents pushing the boundaries of viticulture and winemaking, and in so doing making wines that are polished and elegant now while retaining Barolo’s famous capacity for longterm aging. This is soaring, heady, profound Barolo ready to age right alongside the famous names in your cellar. Fogliati is a name to watch in an appellation full of famous names, and their “Bussia” is the proof. It’s technically located in Castiglione Falletto, but the vine holdings stretch over into Monforte d’Alba as well. In 1950, the estate in its current form was purchased by Guido Fogliati. He made wine, but when he passed away, the winemaking stopped and the estate was held in a kind of stasis; the fruit grown there was sold off to large producers. He consults for some of the best-known wineries in the region, and has launched his own label to widespread acclaim. At Fogliati, he guides every farming and winemaking decision. The vines are farmed organically, and winemaking is guided by tradition–aging only takes place in large, old oak, and macerations can last over a month–but also pursued with a decidedly modern diligence and precision. It was the very first site to be recognized as a cru, and Fogliati’s neighbors are a who’s who of the appellation’s top names, such as Colla, Fennocchio, and Conterno. The 2016 Fogliati Barolo “Bussia” was hand-picked, then spontaneously fermented for 45 days. It aged for 18 months in large oak botti. As soon as it enters your glass, you know you’re in soulstirring, classic Barolo territory: rose petals, lavender, crunchy red cherries and raspberries, red plum flesh, licorice, balsam wood, clove, and a hint of tarry, leathery savor. The palate is dense and medium-full, tannins very much to the fore but also very elegant. There’s an incredible purity to the red fruit here, an immediate accessibility Barolo isn’t always thought to have. It’s stunning right now, though still very clearly quite early in its life. Yet, in just twenty two years the Boffa family has managed to make a lasting impression on their adopted home. It started in 2003 when Maria Angela Brosio and her husband Luigi Antonio Boffa purchased a 100 year old farmhouse near Monforte d’Alba and the surrounding land, which included a small vineyard. They quickly fell in love with the culture, food, and of course world famous wine that surrounded them. After converting the farmhouse into a bed and breakfast, they built a cellar next door and began making their own wine as well. This brought their total vineyard area to seven hectares, which is where it remains today. Bussia is a name that is well known to even casual Barolo aficionados–it’s a large cru with some excellent and highly acclaimed parcels, and we’ve featured various versions many times in our offers. Le Coste, or as it is often labeled now “Le Coste di Monforte,” is much smaller and sits at the very southeastern corner of Monforte d’Alba, and as such at the very border of the Barolo DOCG itself. But, this hidden gem is actually very well known among insiders, owing much of its fame to the fact that it was almost certainly the source for the very earliest versions of Giacomo Conterno’s iconic masterpiece “Monfortino.”

Le Coste has a high concentration of ancient limestone, with fossilized marine life much as you find in parts of Burgundy, that is mixed with sandstone and very little clay. This leads to wines that have a bit more elegance and lift than their neighbors to the north, but there is still oodles of Monforte power and depth here too. Paolo’s first vintage of Le Coste was 2010, and judging by today’s 2013 he got things exactly right from the start. That begins with farming, and the Amalia estate has been organic and eco-certified from the beginning. The winemaking is traditional with a few modern touches: De-stemmed Nebbiolo is fermented and macerated in steel tanks for several weeks before being racked into large, mostly neutral French oak barrels for a long aging period of close to three years, and then further aging in bottle.

So, how have we managed to score a bit of the excellent 2013 vintage? It’s a simple story. A local importer of Italian wine began working with Cascina Amalia in the early aughts. His passion and palate are impeccable, but he was less motivated to actually move the wine into restaurants and retail shops. Eventually though his distributor convinced him it was time to sell some of the treasures he was hoarding, and that is how we secured a small lot (just a few cases!). Serve this perfectly preserved beauty at cellar temperature after a gentle decanting and you’ll get a rush of peak Nebbiolo brilliance: Black and red cherries, Damson plums, kirsch, dried roses, tar, blood orange peel, leather, wild fennel, dried porcini, and a bit of savory allspice. It’s drinking beautifully now but I’m sure it has another decade at least of prime time left. From calcareous-clay slopes around 300–400 meters, the wine shows pale garnet color and a lifted bouquet of wild rose, violet, broom, strawberry, plum, red fig, and carob, with sweet spice and licorice accents; on the palate it’s fresh, delicate, and floral with velvety, sweet-edged tannins and integrated acidity that carry through a long, persistent finish.

Why You'll Love It:

Perfumed, terroir-driven Barolo from a long-rooted La Morra family, offering classic floral Nebbiolo aromatics and silky, finely woven tannins.

Five-star 2019 vintage pedigree: ripe yet precise, with energy and balance that rivals far pricier neighbors, and critical acclaim from leading Italian guides.

Serious Barolo under $60—a cellar-worthy, cru-level feel at a “village” price, ideal for collectors and Nebbiolo-curious guests alike.

How To Serve It:

Serve at 57°F–60°F in a large Burgundy or Nebbiolo stem to showcase the aromatics and soften the youthful structure.<span data-state="closed" aria-label="Ciabot Berton Barolo la Morra 2019 -
