Classic expressions reveal notes of red cherry, rose petals, dried herbs, and spice, with a balance that allows the wine to be enjoyed both young and after years of cellaring. Frankly, “Cichin” is going to appreciate in both senses, but I’m here for the wine, not the speculation: This is traditionally styled Nebbiolo at its best, just beginning to blossom and promising more heady thrills in the years to come. These two sites, situated along the same southwest-facing ridge, are probably the two most acclaimed crus in Treiso, and while there are other producers bottling vineyard-designate wines from these sites, the Nadas are the ones with the house (and winery) on the hill.

Today’s 2017 from “Valeirano” is in every sense a wine grown in the Nada family’s backyard, as it has been for generations, and no matter how many Barbarescos I encounter with a similarly epic backstory, I’m never not blown away—especially when you factor in the price. The same family has farmed the same vineyard for more than a century, sourcing this wine from 40+-year-old plantings, and the wine still only costs $50. This estate has topped the value-for-dollar charts for as long as I can remember, and longtime proprietor Giulio Grasso really outdid himself when he launched his “Autinbej'' bottling in 2014. His stated mission with Autinbej (a word from Piedmontese dialect describing the sunniest spot in a vineyard) was to deliver real-deal Barbaresco at a price that would enable restaurants to pour it by the glass. Here we are with the ’21 vintage, and the wine is truer than ever to its original promise. Let’s say it loud for the folks in the back: This is a Barbaresco value that might well beat them all! On the one hand, it’s what you might call a gateway wine—a Barbaresco styled to draw you in, not scare you away—but it’s also sneakily serious, age-worthy wine at this price. Light fading at the edges and slight mature notes in the bouquet lead me to believe the 2018 will likely be more of a medium-term drinker, its notable presence notwithstanding. Tobacco, dried herbs, mint, leather, cinnamon and dried autumn leaves all develop with a bit of aeration.
