La Spinetta, Barbaresco “Starderi”

If you were to conduct a side-by-side comparison of La Spinetta’s assorted single-vineyard Barbaresco bottlings, it is likely that “Starderi” will emerge as the burliest of the bunch. As with proprietor Giorgio Rivetti’s other cru vineyard holdings, his parcel in Starderi, acquired in the mid-1990s, contains seriously old vines (60+ years) and boasts a near-full southern exposure—great for soaking up all-day sun and producing wines of brooding power. Aged in French oak barriques (20% new) for 20-22 months, this 2016 is still young and needs lots of time in a decanter if consuming now. Otherwise, lay it down for 15-20 years and allow its complex components time to knit together and harmonize.

Northwestern Italy

Piedmont

Italy’s Piedmont region is really a wine “nation”unto itself, producing world-class renditions of every type of wine imaginable: red, white, sparkling, sweet...you name it! However, many wine lovers fixate on the region’s most famous appellations—Barolo and Barbaresco—and the inimitable native red that powers these wines:Nebbiolo.

Tuscany

Chianti

The area known as “Chianti” covers a major chunk of Central Tuscany, from Pisa to Florence to Siena to Arezzo—and beyond. Any wine with “Chianti” in its name is going to contain somewhere between 70% to 100% Sangiovese, and there are eight geographically specific sub-regions under the broader Chianti umbrella.
