Germano Angelo, Langhe Nebbiolo

Founded in 1908, the Germano Angelo Winery and Estate has always been family owned and operated for well over a century now. Angelo’s sons, David and Giovanni were also responsible for establishing the important Consorzio di Tutela dal Barolo e del Barbaresco. Today, Germano Angelo's great-grandson, David Angelo, runs the estate with respect for tradition and continues to uphold the quality his forebearers established. This baby Barolo comes from the same vineyard as their Cru Rué Barolo and is crafted in the style of a Barolo. While many examples of Langhe Nebbiolo hail from lesser plots of land and are made in a quaffable and approachable style, David creates an example that is built to last and deliver the regal expression of Nebbiolo found only in Barolo.

As many of you already know, 2010 was an acclaimed, highly collectible vintage for Piedmont. This particular wine is a true showcase of baby Barolo from that once-in-a-couple-decades sort of year. Derived from the grey-blue marl of Cru Rué’s distinct soils at an altitude of around 1000 feet, this wine is crafted from a vineyard that the Germano family has been nurturing for five generations. The family cellar actually contains bottles of Barolo from Rué that date back to 1943. The pristine fruit is hand-harvested then fermented in stainless steel before it is aged in oak. The result is a Nebbiolo of immense concentration, structure and elegance that is a rarity in a Langhe Nebbiolo and represents astonishing price to quality.

This 2010 Langhe Nebbiolo displays a dark garnet core with slight orange and garnet reflections on the rim. The powerful and slightly spicy nose offers perfumed aromatics of red and black plum, redcurrant, cranberry and dried cherry woven into aromas of dried wildflowers, fennel, tar, crushed cacao nib, a hint of black pepper and a touch of vintage leather. Medium-plus in body, the palate delivers generous structure, akin to Barolo, with flavors that confirm the nose along with additional notes of wild red fruits layered with mushroom and black tea then finishes with a hint of spice and plenty of grip. Decant for one hour and serve in Burgundy stems at 60-65 degrees or simply wait as this wine continues to evolve in your cellar over the next few years. This wine is beautiful in its youth if given enough air but has the build to age gracefully. Serve with a dish that has enough fats to combine with the tannins for a totally satisfying experience. I recommend this classic pot roast over mascarpone polenta.

Northwestern Italy

Piedmont

Italy’s Piedmont region is really a wine “nation”unto itself, producing world-class renditions of every type of wine imaginable: red, white, sparkling, sweet...you name it! However, many wine lovers fixate on the region’s most famous appellations—Barolo and Barbaresco—and the inimitable native red that powers these wines:Nebbiolo.

Tuscany

Chianti

The area known as “Chianti” covers a major chunk of Central Tuscany, from Pisa to Florence to Siena to Arezzo—and beyond. Any wine with “Chianti” in its name is going to contain somewhere between 70% to 100% Sangiovese, and there are eight geographically specific sub-regions under the broader Chianti umbrella.
