Domaine Gardiés, Mas Las Cabes Rouge

Jean Gardiés took the helm of his family domaine, increased production and up the ante for quality in the estate as well as the region. Around 1990, he also purchased the 15-hectare Mas Las Cabes Vineyard on the outskirts of Espira-de-l'Agly. Comprised of 10 to 30-year-old vines, rooted in black schist over calcaire, limestone soil, this site delivers a classic Roussillon cuvée of 50% Syrah, 30% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre and 10% Carignan with unmistakable minerality, a bounty of fruit and impeccable balance. Nestled between the Spanish-French border of the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean, this wine boasts lush fruit while simultaneously retaining fresh acidity thanks to its close proximity to the Mediterranean breezes.

Jean, with the help of his son, Victor, has become widely known as one of the most respected vignerons in the entire south of France. His vineyards are farmed with entirely biodynamic methods, which lend an energy and life force to his wines that is unparalleled in the region. Following harvest, the grapes are macerated for three weeks then racked to one-third neutral French oak and two-thirds concrete tank where the wine ages for eight months prior to bottling. Jean employs female oenologists as he feels their precision and meticulous attention to detail is as innate as the elegance found in his wines.

This 2014 Mas Las Cabes Rouge displays a deep, dark ruby core with magenta and purple reflections on the rim. The lively nose boasts a fresh berry patch full of boysenberry, blackberry and blueberry as well as black cherry and black plum over fresh wildflowers and violets. The concentrated, medium-bodied palate confirms the bounty of fruit on the nose and finishes with incredibly distinct minerality. This is a lush, balanced wine of pure joy for a price that is simply astonishing. The absolute perfect expression of Southern France, this wine is perfect right this moment and will keep beautifully over the next 2-3 years. Serve this wine with braised beef cheeks to liven up any wintry evening.

France

Bourgogne

Beaujolais

Enjoying the greatest wines of Beaujolais starts, as it usually does, with the lay of the land. In Beaujolais, 10 localities have been given their own AOC (Appellation of Controlled Origin) designation. They are: Saint Amour; Juliénas; Chénas; Moulin-à Vent; Fleurie; Chiroubles; Morgon; Régnié; Côte de Brouilly; and Brouilly.

Southwestern France

Bordeaux

Bordeaux surrounds two rivers, the Dordogne and Garonne, which intersect north of the city of Bordeaux to form the Gironde Estuary, which empties into the Atlantic Ocean. The region is at the 45th parallel (California’s Napa Valley is at the38th), with a mild, Atlantic-influenced climate enabling the maturation of late-ripening varieties.

Central France

Loire Valley

The Loire is France’s longest river (634 miles), originating in the southerly Cévennes Mountains, flowing north towards Paris, then curving westward and emptying into the Atlantic Ocean near Nantes. The Loire and its tributaries cover a huge swath of central France, with most of the wine appellations on an east-west stretch at47 degrees north (the same latitude as Burgundy).

Northeastern France

Alsace

Alsace, in Northeastern France, is one of the most geologically diverse wine regions in the world, with vineyards running from the foothills of theVosges Mountains down to the Rhine River Valley below.
