Domaine Laporte, “La Veillante”

Domaine Laporte is a well known producer in the Loire Valley which has a history dating back to the mid 1800s. They are most famous for their monopole in Sancerre, “Domaine du Rochoy,” although Laporte makes numerous lively examples of wine in the surrounding appellations in many styles, all from strictly organic vineyards. The most interesting wine I have recently tasted is their red from Châteaumeillant called “La Veillante,” which is made from mostly Pinot Noir and Gamay planted on soils of sand, limestone and clay. Châteaumeillant is an appellation which is rarely spoken of in the wine world because little of it makes its way to our shores, as it is incredibly small. There is only roughly 200 acres planted in the Châteaumeillant appellation and I cannot recall seeing a bottle of it in the US before this. To be honest there is very little information to be found about the production of this wine, but frankly I don’t care. The wine is full of energy and personality, it is an unpretentiously perfect light red wine that is perfect for sunny day. The wine is dangerously drinkable, when the first bottle is gone you’ll wish there were 2 more behind it.

The 2012 Veillante has a light ruby red core moving to pink hues on the rim. The nose is alive and incredibly floral exhibiting aromatics of huckleberries, wild strawberries, fresh white rose, orange peel, hibiscus, wild herbs and wet tea. The palate is medium in body with a silky texture along with flavors of pomegranates, strawberry, crushed white earth, wild flowers and a touch of spice. This wine needs a touch of air, I recommend serving at cellar temperature in large Burgundy stems and then wait 4-5 minutes while the wine opens up, it does not take long. The only problem is the bottle is empty before you are ready with the next. This is the ultimate outdoors wine perfect for any occasion, but please keep a slight chill on the bottle to keep it from getting warm in the sun. Get some friends together along with some charcuterie, pâté, french cheese, fruit, a fresh baguette and 3 bottles of this wine and an ice pack to keep it cool. You can’t go wrong.

France

Bourgogne

Beaujolais

Enjoying the greatest wines of Beaujolais starts, as it usually does, with the lay of the land. In Beaujolais, 10 localities have been given their own AOC (Appellation of Controlled Origin) designation. They are: Saint Amour; Juliénas; Chénas; Moulin-à Vent; Fleurie; Chiroubles; Morgon; Régnié; Côte de Brouilly; and Brouilly.

Southwestern France

Bordeaux

Bordeaux surrounds two rivers, the Dordogne and Garonne, which intersect north of the city of Bordeaux to form the Gironde Estuary, which empties into the Atlantic Ocean. The region is at the 45th parallel (California’s Napa Valley is at the38th), with a mild, Atlantic-influenced climate enabling the maturation of late-ripening varieties.

Central France

Loire Valley

The Loire is France’s longest river (634 miles), originating in the southerly Cévennes Mountains, flowing north towards Paris, then curving westward and emptying into the Atlantic Ocean near Nantes. The Loire and its tributaries cover a huge swath of central France, with most of the wine appellations on an east-west stretch at47 degrees north (the same latitude as Burgundy).

Northeastern France

Alsace

Alsace, in Northeastern France, is one of the most geologically diverse wine regions in the world, with vineyards running from the foothills of theVosges Mountains down to the Rhine River Valley below.
