Domaine Georges Vernay, Blonde du Seigneur

The Côte-Rôtie appellation is situated in the northernmost part of the Northern Rhône Valley; terraced vineyards are planted on some of the steepest slopes in all of France, making manual vineyard work in this region arduous and tasking. However, the steepness does not scare the Vernay family, but actually empowers them to create distinct, unique expressions of classically-styled Syrah. For three generations, the family has diligently worked their sheer vineyard sites and produced incredible results. Drawing on the ancient history of the Romans, who originally planted the vines in this region some 2,000 years ago, the Vernays focus on a combination of tradition and modern innovation—bringing together the best of both worlds.

In the vineyards, organic farming and biodiversity are key to healthy vines. The land of the estate has been kept relatively wild, allowing for a natural environment to thrive, and the vineyards are an integral part of this diverse ecosystem. This approach respects the traditions of the ancient Romans and allows the wines to reflect the true history of the land, flora and fauna. The natural approach in the vineyards allows for serious expression of terroir, and the never-ending quest for perfection in the cellar makes the Vernay family’s wines distinct and desirable. Modern empirical analysis, continual tasting of the grapes and wines as they develop, and dedicated research make each vintage a little bit better than the last. This is one of the reasons I have always loved the wines of Domaine Georges Vernay; although the wines are always incredible, the family has never settled in their pursuit of perfection. With each vintage, minor changes based on the passionate research they have done improves the wines year after year—bringing the quality of their bottlings to a whole different level of satisfaction. For the 2012 Blonde du Seigneur, 5% of Viognier is blended into this supple Syrah to add just the right amount of finesse.

The 2012 Blonde du Seigneur has an incredibly concentrated purple core with garnet and purple hues on the rim. The nose is explosive with aromas of ripe wild black fruits, fresh violets, wet leaves, crushed granite, black olive and a touch of star anise and other exotic spices. The palate is ripe, forward and rich with very polished tannins. This wine needs a touch of air, about twenty minutes in a decanter before coming to its peak. This wine is forward and delicious at the moment, yet will easily age a decade or more, so I would advise you put a few away in the cellar.

France

Bourgogne

Beaujolais

Enjoying the greatest wines of Beaujolais starts, as it usually does, with the lay of the land. In Beaujolais, 10 localities have been given their own AOC (Appellation of Controlled Origin) designation. They are: Saint Amour; Juliénas; Chénas; Moulin-à Vent; Fleurie; Chiroubles; Morgon; Régnié; Côte de Brouilly; and Brouilly.

Southwestern France

Bordeaux

Bordeaux surrounds two rivers, the Dordogne and Garonne, which intersect north of the city of Bordeaux to form the Gironde Estuary, which empties into the Atlantic Ocean. The region is at the 45th parallel (California’s Napa Valley is at the38th), with a mild, Atlantic-influenced climate enabling the maturation of late-ripening varieties.

Central France

Loire Valley

The Loire is France’s longest river (634 miles), originating in the southerly Cévennes Mountains, flowing north towards Paris, then curving westward and emptying into the Atlantic Ocean near Nantes. The Loire and its tributaries cover a huge swath of central France, with most of the wine appellations on an east-west stretch at47 degrees north (the same latitude as Burgundy).

Northeastern France

Alsace

Alsace, in Northeastern France, is one of the most geologically diverse wine regions in the world, with vineyards running from the foothills of theVosges Mountains down to the Rhine River Valley below.
