Domaine Lorenzon, Montagny Premier Cru - Les Truffières

Amongst the hilly terrain of the Côte Chalonnaise, there are dozens of Premier Cru vineyards which all hold unique properties in various communes—one of which is Mercurey, where Bruno Lorenzon owns eleven acres of vineyards. The majority of his vineyards are planted in Premier Cru sites. Today’s wine comes from the renowned Premier Cru of Les Truffière, located in the neighboring village of Montagny. In this vineyard site, the classic Côte Chalonnaise soil types of clay and limestone produce the captivating minerality with creamy texture that we love in White Burgundy. The purity of Lorenzon’s viticultural practices and winemaking techniques bring life and personality to this wine; it stands out amongst the often lackluster white offerings from others in the area who use conventional farming methods and have higher yields.

After traveling the world as a consultant for wineries, Lorenzon returned to his home in the Côte Chalonnaise in 1997 to take over the estate from his father; he is the third generation of his family to maintain the vineyards and produce classic wines from the Côte Chalonnaise region. Having traveled the world, learning about viticultural and winemaking practices, Lorenzon has a keen sense for the special terroir of Burgundy. He believes that great wines are first and foremost made in the vineyard, and as a result, gives an immense amount of attention to his vineyards and to each individual grape. He farms organically and does not use herbicides when he works with his vines, because he does not want any chemicals to influence the flavors of his wines. Lorenzon has a strong passion for the astounding fruit that can be grown in his vineyard sites, and cherishes the tremendous quality that he is able to extract from the grapes. He is careful to harvest the grapes at just the right physiological ripeness, picking them with utmost caution and care. In the cellar, he respects the terroir and the particular characteristics of each vintage—choosing to work closely with a local cooper that he formerly worked for, Tonnellerie de Mercurey. The longstanding relationship with Tonnellerie de Mercurey has allowed Lorenzon to choose and age his own wood; he also handcrafts the barrels and toasts them to his own liking. This personal process is individualized for each vintage and each wine, so as to retain the integrity of the fruit, vineyards and terroir. The result is quintessential, small  production of timeless White Burgundy, with classic qualities and serious character.

The 2012 Premier Cru Les Truffières has a concentrated yellow core with lovely gold and green reflections on the rim. The aromatics are enticing with powerful aromas of ripe yellow apple, bright white peach, acacia flowers, a hint of honey and subtle crushed stones. On the palate, the creamy texture fills the mouth with beautiful roundness; expansive notes of dried yellow apple, ripe peach, dried yellow plums, and a hint of sweet flowers brings immense pleasure to the palate. On the finish, the wine lingers with the flavor of gently crushed stones. This wine is pure and delicious to drink now; I would consume it soon, as I believe it will peak over the next two to three years. Serve in a Burgundy stem glass at just about cellar temperature, or even a touch higher at 55-60 degrees. Enjoy this rich white with a simple roast chicken dinner—ideally with roasted carrots and squash, which will all come to together to complement the texture and flavors of the wine perfectly.

France

Bourgogne

Beaujolais

Enjoying the greatest wines of Beaujolais starts, as it usually does, with the lay of the land. In Beaujolais, 10 localities have been given their own AOC (Appellation of Controlled Origin) designation. They are: Saint Amour; Juliénas; Chénas; Moulin-à Vent; Fleurie; Chiroubles; Morgon; Régnié; Côte de Brouilly; and Brouilly.

Southwestern France

Bordeaux

Bordeaux surrounds two rivers, the Dordogne and Garonne, which intersect north of the city of Bordeaux to form the Gironde Estuary, which empties into the Atlantic Ocean. The region is at the 45th parallel (California’s Napa Valley is at the38th), with a mild, Atlantic-influenced climate enabling the maturation of late-ripening varieties.

Central France

Loire Valley

The Loire is France’s longest river (634 miles), originating in the southerly Cévennes Mountains, flowing north towards Paris, then curving westward and emptying into the Atlantic Ocean near Nantes. The Loire and its tributaries cover a huge swath of central France, with most of the wine appellations on an east-west stretch at47 degrees north (the same latitude as Burgundy).

Northeastern France

Alsace

Alsace, in Northeastern France, is one of the most geologically diverse wine regions in the world, with vineyards running from the foothills of theVosges Mountains down to the Rhine River Valley below.
