Where else can you find a small, excellent estate making wine from a prized parcel within an acclaimed “cru,” and offering one of the very best vintages of said wine in a generation for a single c-note? The tried and true comparison to Burgundy reveals a simple truth: Scarzello’s Sarmassa “Vigna Merenda” stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the best examples of Clos de Vougeot or Le Corton. Indeed that comparison runs deep since both of those vineyards have internal parcels prized above others, much as the “Vigna Merenda” vines are for Sarmassa. Of course, the top tier of those Burgundian Grand Crus will set you back three, four, or five times what Scarzello costs, which brings us full circle to the unparalleled value of this wine and this region. 2016 is a vintage that will bring many, many years of pure joy to Nebbiolo lovers’ hearts, so load up with as much of this stunner as you can, while you can!

By the standards of Piedmont, and Italy generally, Scarzello is a relatively new winery, having been founded a little less than 50 years ago and producing their first vintage in 1978. For our purposes, that fact is most definitely working in our favor, because this small, expertly managed estate still flies very much under the radar of the press and the global Barolo fan club. Scarzello was blessed from the beginning with some top-notch vineyards, including a prime section of vines in the “Sarmassa” cru, and produced solid wines for the first two decades of production. But it was in 1998, when third-generation winemaker Federico Scarzello returned from enology school in Alba, that quality really began to soar. “Fede,” as his friends and family call him, has now been coaxing the full range of aromatic and textural complexity that his vineyards and their special terroir can achieve for over two decades.

Fede is and always has been a staunch traditionalist. He insists on long, slow macerations for Nebbiolo, and uses only very large oak barrels. For the estate’s top wine, “Vigna Merenda,” this means 30-50 days on the skins in large tanks before aging for at least 30 months in 25 hectoliter barrels, and then an additional three years plus in the bottle before release. All of this tradition unfolds in a very cold, very old cellar that is just steps away from the ancient castle of Barolo.

But expert, old-school winemaking is only impressive when you start with pristine fruit and phenomenal terroir. The Sarmassa vineyard is situated just north of the village of Barolo proper, with “Cannubi San Lorenzo” on its eastern flank and the “Cerequio” vineyard on the west, marking the border with the commune of La Morra. Indeed, the Scarzello’s sub plot, named “Vigna Merenda,” is situated on a ridge line that runs continuously from Cerequio into Sarmassa, and is dominated by a subsoil of clay and limestone marl. The slope has a classic south/southwest exposure, and the vines sit at around 250-300 meters of altitude. All of these factors contribute to the wine's ability to achieve that ultimate Barolo high mark, where power, elegance, and finesse are seamlessly woven together. “Vigna Merenda” is only produced in the best vintages, and 2016 was not only great but it is likely the most complete wine the estate has ever produced.

With an exemplary vintage like 2016, patience is needed. Turns out that land, full of gravel and river sediment, was perfect for growing wine grapes, and within just a few generations the wines of Bordeaux had become famous throughout Europe. But success is hard to sustain, and Lavillotte was one of the unfortunate properties that missed out on the 1855 classification of Grand Crus. Following a scourge of phylloxera and two world wars the property was in complete disrepair when a young Jacques Pedro was able to purchase the vineyards for what we can only assume was a screaming good price. In 1962 he set about replanting all of the vines, and rejuvenated the entire estate slowly over many years. He considers himself a “terroir winemaker,” working naturally in the cellar and using organic and biodynamic practices in the vines in order to coax the most transparent “soil to glass” transfer possible. He has begun to use clay amphora for fermentation via native yeasts, and aging is done entirely in neutral French oak barriques. Jean-Yves named the estate “La Hase” in honor of his grandfather, who used to take him hunting for wild hare (hase in French).

The Fronsac region is known for its steep hills and its forests, which help to make it especially picturesque but also provide ideal conditions for growing grapes. Indeed, vineyards and winemaking have existed here since Roman times–much longer than the gilded Châteaux on the other side of the river. The soil is also distinct, dominated by sandstone and limestone instead of clay and gravel, which is especially useful in the increasingly hot, dry summers. The steeper slopes and well drained subsoils lend freshness to otherwise sturdy, often slightly rustic wines. This terroir plays perfectly with Jean-Yves old-school, minimalist approach to winemaking, and it adds an extra layer of elegance, complexity, and lift to wine that, on paper, looks to be more simple–especially considering the price!

With a solid eight plus years of age the 2016 la Hase is hitting its perfect drinking window right now, and is generally ready to rock right after pulling the cork, though a quick splash decant wouldn’t hurt. Served at cellar temperature in a Bordeaux stem, the wine shows a vibrant garnet with a violet core and just a hint of orange at the rim. The nose is pure, pedigreed, Right Bank brilliance with up front notes of ripe plum, cherry liqueur, and red currant followed by more savory hints of dried sage, mint, dark chocolate, spice box, and damp earth. The tannins are perfectly sweet and soft, but still present, and the surprisingly bright acidity lifts the wine into a long, mineral flecked finish. That freshness makes the “la Hase” a very versatile food wine, going great with classic bistro dishes but also any weeknight staple like pizza, tacos or burgers. And according to María José López de Heredia they would “miss it in their range,” if they chose the elevated designation. The bottom line though is that this is top tier quality Rioja for a relative song, and at eight years old and counting it is very ready to drink–so unlike the “Tondonia” from earlier you don’t need to wait for a special occasion to open this bottle, you can enjoy it now. We love a great many producers in this region, and will continue to offer them, but Lopez’s position as the torchbearer for tradition here is undeniable. Since their founding in 1877, they’ve been continuously family-owned, which stands in sharp contrast to the other linchpin producers they rub shoulders with. Those other producers also largely rely on fruit purchased from other growers, but not so with López; their wines come entirely from estate fruit they’ve farmed themselves, as has been the case for over 100 years. And in the cellar their methods remain staunchly old school. No cultured yeasts, no stainless steel vats, and not a single stave of new oak will be found here. As is the case with all López wines the farming is entirely organic. In the cellar the bunches are fermented with native yeasts in large oak casks before aging for a total of 36 months in neutral American oak barrels that are racked twice a year. After bottling the wine ages for another 36 months or more in bottle before being released. By comparison, Spanish DO regulations require just 12 months in barrel and six in bottle for Crianza wines–clearly the team at López has never, ever done the bare minimum though so there you have it: A wine aged for longer than many Gran Reservas, priced like a bargain regular Reserva, and labeled simply “Crianza.”

The “Cubillo Crianza” is always an excellent value, but that proposition increases several fold in the 2016 vintage. Serve at cellar temperature in a Bordeaux stem and you get waves of red fruits mingling with savory spice and herbs: Pomegranate, bitter cherry, red currant, raspberry, wild thyme, dill, blood orange zest, pink peppercorn, and well worn leather all surround a core of saline minerals and fresh acidity. Unlike the rest of Jean-François’ wines which are primarily Pinot Noir (makes sense, as Bouzy is Pinot country) these special vintage releases are almost entirely built around Chardonnay. With a rich, golden hue, mouth-coating texture, and a velvety mousse, this is a delicacy you don't want to miss. Their estate in Bouzy, which current owner Jean-François Clouet still calls home, dates back even further! Beneath this historic site lies their labyrinthine chalk cellar, which still contains partial false walls that hid precious bottles during the Nazi invasion in World War II. With all this historic grandeur surrounding him, Jean-François draws from tradition and time-honored techniques while respectively embracing modern technology into the mix.

Their vineyard holdings, all Grand Cru, are spread across just eight hectares in Bouzy and its similarly Pinot Noir focused neighbor, Ambonnay. As such, the vast majority of their cuvées are either dominantly, or entirely Pinot. However, they do have small holdings of Chardonnay, planted to the most chalky heavy parcels, and usually they use this fruit to add touches of saline minerality to their wines. But in 2005 Jean-François was really impressed with the quality of the Chardonnay, and so he set most of it aside and that is what eventually became the very first release of his “Dream Vintages.” That tradition has continued, and now whenever he has exceptional Chardonnay to work with he will set that aside to produce another limited edition “Dream Vintage,” which is exactly what he did in 2016.

With extended lees aging, and now a good chunk of time aging in the bottle as well, the 2016 “Dream Vintage” pours a beautiful, honey gold hue, with a very soft yet persistent mousse. Serve it cool, but not right out of the ice box cold, in all-purpose or Burgundy stems and prepare to sit with this wine for an evening of Champagne bliss. A bevy of aromas and flavors will unfold: green and yellow apple, hazelnut, fresh cut pineapple, lemon curd, brioche, baking spices, cocoa powder, and salty minerals. The rich, opulent texture is balanced perfectly by an elegant, bright acidity. The pairing possibilities seem almost endless, but the best bet is to think of this as a top-tier Meursault or Puligny-Montrachet, with bubbles, and go from there. The holidays are in full swing, so you’ll want some Champagne ringers on hand for when you need to really impress, and if you want to do that with spending close to four figures, then the Clouet 2016 is the perfect answer. Barolo’s deep viticultural traditions are fusing with youthful energy, and it all means the region has never been more exciting. Case in point: Fogliati’s Barolo “Bussia” 2016. It comes from 80-year-old vines in one of the region’s most legendary vineyards, made by an estate with over two centuries of grape-growing history, and shepherded into bottle using old-school, artisanal technique. But it also embodies the most exciting trends in the appellation–young, passionate, and globally-inspired talents pushing the boundaries of viticulture and winemaking, and in so doing making wines that are polished and elegant now while retaining Barolo’s famous capacity for longterm aging. This is soaring, heady, profound Barolo ready to age right alongside the famous names in your cellar. Fogliati is a name to watch in an appellation full of famous names, and their “Bussia” is the proof. It’s technically located in Castiglione Falletto, but the vine holdings stretch over into Monforte d’Alba as well. In 1950, the estate in its current form was purchased by Guido Fogliati. He made wine, but when he passed away, the winemaking stopped and the estate was held in a kind of stasis; the fruit grown there was sold off to large producers. Colombo is one of the young names to know in Barolo right now, a winner of Italy’s top prize for best young winemaker. He consults for some of the best-known wineries in the region, and has launched his own label to widespread acclaim. At Fogliati, he guides every farming and winemaking decision. The vines are farmed organically, and winemaking is guided by tradition–aging only takes place in large, old oak, and macerations can last over a month–but also pursued with a decidedly modern diligence and precision. His wines combine Barolo’s famous structure and ageability with a clarity of fruit you don’t often see here, especially in young wines.

Today’s wine comes entirely from eighty-year-old vines in Bussia, Monforte d’Alba’s most hallowed cru. Bussia is legendary, a site of sandy marls and clays that produces some of the longest-lived wines in all of Barolo. It was the very first site to be recognized as a cru, and Fogliati’s neighbors are a who’s who of the appellation’s top names, such as Colla, Fennocchio, and Conterno. The 2016 Fogliati Barolo “Bussia” was hand-picked, then spontaneously fermented for 45 days. It aged for 18 months in large oak botti. As soon as it enters your glass, you know you’re in soulstirring, classic Barolo territory: rose petals, lavender, crunchy red cherries and raspberries, red plum flesh, licorice, balsam wood, clove, and a hint of tarry, leathery savor. The palate is dense and medium-full, tannins very much to the fore but also very elegant. There’s an incredible purity to the red fruit here, an immediate accessibility Barolo isn’t always thought to have. It’s stunning right now, though still very clearly quite early in its life. After a hand-harvest, the grapes were fermented in stainless steel to preserve the pristine fruit and intense minerality. The wine then spent more than six years aging on its lees in the family's deep, cold chalk cellars, developing layers of complexity and a fine, creamy texture. To honor the purity of the fruit and the 2016 vintage—a year known for its balance and freshness—he finished it as an Extra Brut, with a minimal dosage of just 5 grams per liter. The result is a Grand Cru that has stayed under the radar not because it lacks pedigree, but because it has never chased attention.

Why You’ll Love It

True Grand Cru provenance from a historic Saint-Émilion estate with over four centuries of continuity

Fully mature 2016 Right Bank Bordeaux, showing depth, balance, and composure without needing more time

Extraordinary value, offering serious Grand Cru quality at a price that no longer exists for wines like this

How to Serve It

Decant for 30–45 minutes to let the savory, mineral layers fully open

Serve slightly cool, around 60–62°F, to highlight freshness and structure

Pair with classic fare—roast lamb, duck, ribeye, or simply a quiet evening and a proper glass

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0551/3628/8822/files/2016_Chateau_Saint_Martial_Saint-Emilion_Grand_Cru_1_0610e17c-def9-4b0e-b075-2a3348ecee94.png?v=1767374842
2016-domaine-deleuze-rochetin-sarrazine
2016 Domaine Deleuze-Rochetin Sarrazine, Southern Rhône Valley

Domaine Deleuze-Rochetin is a long-standing family farm rooted in Duché d’Uzès, a little-known Southern Rhône appellation that remains overshadowed by Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, and Vacqueyras.
